When Netflix’s Special debuted last year it was groundbreaking for a variety of reasons but primarily for who it centered: a gay man living with a disability. The half-hour series was based on creator Ryan O’Connell’s 2015 memoir I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves and was equal parts comedic and heartwarming. Viewers fell in love, particularly with the care that was put into navigating the show’s sex scenes. Netflix even commissioned a second season. And then the pandemic happened.
Now O’Connell is revealing what’s all been done.
According to a new interview with the writer and star of the series, for out of Specia’s upcoming eight episodes are already done! In act, O’Connell has been editing them already. They include the help of a writer’s room — O’Connell wrote the entire first season alone — and apparently “a lot more gay sex” in store for fans.
“I think anything that still has a stigma attached to it just naturally excites me,” O’Connell told Entertainment Weekly. “I think there shouldn’t be any of that, especially with gay sex. I’ve had to suffer through so many straight sex scenes and now everyone else has to pay.”
Don’t know that we mind that!
The sad part of it all is that with only half of production finished, there’s no timeline on when the second season will see the light of day. Hardcore fans might be happy to know that the creative is already working on other projects. There are a new show and novel in the works.
“It’s too early to say anything, it’s like barely a thing,” he says of the show which he recently pitched.
Well, just know that as soon as you’re ready, we’re here to listen!
