Something in the air is changing and it’s not just the weather —goosebumps are covering your body without a hand to hold.

Cuffing season is upon us. You know, when single gays are ready to hunker down in a committed relationship until spring comes again.

The pandemic has hindered the gay dating world, as it has been nearly impossible to go on adventurous outings and spend time with significant others. Still, the gays have not let that stop them, as many have continued relationships virtually and began using online gay dating apps.

If you’re wondering when it will be safe to date again — or how to do it — you’re not alone. Here’s some tips to ensure your safety while using gay dating apps:

Having The “COVID Talk”

When you first start dating someone new, you usually consider their hobbies, common interests and politics to figure out if you’re a good match. Now, there’s a new level of compatibility added in: you and your partner’s approach to COVID-19 safety.

That means asking questions such as: If your job requires you to be around other people, what precautions do you take during and after interactions? Do you live with other people, and if so, how do you track each other’s risk of exposure to the virus? Do you go to restaurants and other public spaces?

And even though it may feel uncomfortable to ask someone you just met about their daily whereabouts and activities, it’s essential for everyone’s health and well-being.

Do Your Research

Everyone should know the drill- do a simple Google search before meeting your date. That doesn’t mean become a stalker, that just means make sure you have at least some idea as to who the person is before you meet with him. If possible, try to find pictures and see what additional information comes up about the person beyond Facebook and Instagram.

Video Chat Your Date Before Meeting

Today, there are so many ways to video chat with the ability to use FaceTime, Zoom, Skype and even Facebook for video calls. It’s a good idea to get a glimpse of your date before meeting him. This could also help to reduce the risk of being “catfished” by someone claiming to be someone he is not.

Drive Yourself or Take Public Transportation

Don’t accept the invitation to carpool- take your own vehicle or use public transportation if possible. By carpooling, your first date would find out where you live and essentially have control over where you two go. Taking your own vehicle also lowers the risk of putting yourself in an uncomfortable or even dangerous situation because you’ll be in control over where you go.

Tell Someone Else the Deets

That brings us to the next tip- let someone else know who your date is, where you are going, when you expect to be home and any other important details. It gives you the comfort of knowing someone else knows where you’re supposed to be if something goes wrong.

Don’t Overdo It On The Booze

Let me be clear about this: alcohol doesn’t assault people, people assault people. That said, I think most of us know from experience that it’s much more difficult to stay aware of your surroundings and make good choices when you’re drunk as hell. (Also, hangovers are the worst.) So instead of drinking five beers in five hours like I once did on a date, maybe stick to one nerve-settling glass of wine.

If It Sounds Too Good To Be True, It Probably Is

People can create dream personas online. If your date is a model-slash-anything, boasts about their huge luxury yacht and claims to have invented a billion-selling app, they’re probably lying. If anything sounds strange or unbelievable, ask questions. If the person is defensive, you’re likely on to something.

Be Honest With Yourself

Don’t ignore any hesitancy or feelings of discomfort. Don’t let a charming stranger or single-too-long desperation convince you to deny your gut feelings about the stranger you’ve just met.

The idiom is true: It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Always.
